The TomTom XL IQ now comes with some great features that were previously only available with the high-end models. One of these features is IQ Routes; with this feature you can get the fastest route to your destination based on the average road speeds for a particular time of day. The device will figure in traffic congestion based on the day of the week, as well as the time of day, which will help you avoid delays.
In addition to IQ Routes the TomTom XL IQ comes with preloaded maps of 42 European countries. You will also get Advanced Lane Guidance; with this feature you get a 3D map that show you exactly what lane you need to be in. The size of the screen is average, measuring 4.3-inches.
Another useful feature is safety camera locations; this feature will warn you when you are approaching a safety camera so that you can check your speed. The service is free for three months, after which you will have to buy a subscription for the service. You will also get a free trial on a service that will keep you updated on the local fuel prices, which is great if you are traveling and want to find the least expensive fuel, without a lot of searching and fuss.
When you buy the TomTom XL IQ you will be getting a quality satellite navigation device; the build quality is good and its performance is reliable. The only real problem that you might encounter with the XL IQ is that inputting an address can be a challenge if you don’t have small fingers. There are no multimedia features or Bluetooth with this device, and it does lack built in TMC.
The TomTom XL IQ does seem to take some time when processing routes and pinpointing your current location; this can be frustrating if you are in a hurry and want to be on the road instead of waiting for the system to locate you.
The TomTom XL IQ is an affordable mid-level, satellite navigation device that is very useful if you travel frequently. You won’t get a lot of the extras that you get with the high level GPS devices, but you do get a basic system that can help you navigate to your destination safely and reliably. The price is slightly high, considering the lack of extras that you get with the XL IQ, but the device does do what it says it will do.
