The TomTom Start is an entry-level satellite navigation device that features a 3.5-inch touchscreen; the Start can be used for your automobile or as a portable GPS. On the front of the unit are two buttons and the display; one button is to plan your route and the other is so that you can view maps. This is a solidly built GPS that is so easy to use that you probably won’t have any problems, even if you have never used a satellite navigation system before.
Some of the features that you’ll get with the TomTom Start include route calculation powered by Map Share technology and IQ Routes. With IQ routes the device can actually choose the fastest route to your destination based on your average driving speed, as well as the time of day.
Two features that are missing are text to speech, as well as lane guidance; both of these features are very popular so the fact that the TomTom Start does not include these features may be a deal breaker for some people. In addition, the screen size make is difficult to view if you are driving, which makes the lack of text to voice even more of a problem.
The startup screen on the TomTom Start displays your current speed, as well as the speed limit for the road you are currently traveling on; you also get the distance to your destination and an estimated time of arrival. There is no way to change the data shown on the screen, plus you won’t get any extras, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, etc. This is basically a no frills GPS system to help you get from point A to point B.

The TomTom Start can be personalized with removable covers; these covers come in six different colors. You can also customize the device with different voices and startup screens via TomTom’s software for your PC.
The TomTom Start is a great choice for those wanting a basic GPS system. This is a budget friendly device that you can take anywhere with you, and it is far more powerful than the GPS features that come with most smartphones.
