» Report warns business drivers not to rely solely on sat nav

Whilst many companies have started using sat nav devices to get around on work’s business one report has warned that they shouldn’t rely solely on these devices as otherwise they could still end up losing their way.

A recent study has been carried out into business drivers in the UK, and the results of the study found that those driving vehicles on the roads on business tend to travel an average forty two miles in the wrong direction when they get lost, and this compares to twenty three miles for road users that are not driving on business. The results came from a survey carried out by Continental Tyres, in which around four thousand road users were polled.

Officials involved in the research said that business drivers tend to take around sixteen minutes to take any action when they are lost, compared to just eight minutes for motorists that are not driving on business. The report further claimed that motorists in the UK clock up an additional six hundred and seventy miles a year as a result of being lost, and all of this could be impacting heavily on companies who have to pay for the fuel in vehicles or who reimburse employees for mileage.

A report released following the research has warned that whilst using a sat nav device in company vehicles has become a growing trend these days, and can be helpful to drivers, it is important not to rely solely on the sat nav. Officials from Continental said that drivers also needed to ensure that they planned their route before they headed off just in case. Around sixty percent of drivers that used sat navs said that they had still managed to get lost at least once.

An official from Continental said: “Because of blindly following satnav, we are losing the art of map reading and only getting more lost. This survey shows the importance of planning before a journey and serves as a reminder that it’s vital to check your vehicle before you go and ensure you know the route.”
